A Word From Pastor Sadie
Welcome to Bethany United Methodist Church. Ours is a congregation of progressive Christians open to the direction of God and growing in grace together. Everyone is welcome here, just as they are. Join our vibrant and diverse Reconciling Congregation as we discover what God has in store.
I stand in a long, respectable line of pastors to this Christian community. Our roots go back to the 1800s, but Bethany is committed to the future. We remodeled our old, failing building into a sign of newness at the corner of Clipper and Sanchez. We intend to be here at least another 100 years.
Our Pastor – Rev. Sadie Stone
The Rev. Sadie Stone has a Masters in Divinity from Yale Divinity School and a BA from the University of the Pacific in Religious Studies. She has been sole Pastor of Bethany UMC since July 2015. Pastor Sadie has a passion for Social justice, including LGBTQ rights, race relations and reproductive justice, interfaith work, and creative worship design. She’s a member of the California-Nevada Philippine Solidarity Task Force and sits on the board of the San Francisco Night Ministry. Prior to her ministry here, she served churches in Le Grand, CA and Palo Alto.
Pastor Sadie grew up in Winnemucca, NV and lives with her husband Reid, and twins Eli and Emerson. She has eclectic literary taste, reflected in the gross ton of books she refuses to get rid of, and her refusal to buy a kindle. Pastor Sadie also enjoys running, and the San Francisco Giants. Music Director – Katelyn Tan
Katelyn Tan began studying the piano at the age of 10. As a San Francisco native, she attended the San Francisco Ruth Asawa School of the Arts where she furthered her studies in music. Upon graduating from the University of the Pacific, where she received a B.M. in Piano Performance, Katelyn won positions at the San Francisco Ballet and San Francisco Opera where she currently works as one of their rehearsal pianists. She is currently pursuing a master degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is looking forward to graduating this May (2020). In her spare time she enjoys cooking, listening to true crime podcasts, and playing chamber music with friends. To inquire about any music needs or requests Contact Katelyn by clicking here.
Administrative Assistant – Ann Dayton
In October 2015, we welcomed Ann Dayton as our administrative assistant. Ann came to us with 10 years of church administration experience. She was previously on staff at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cathedral Hill. She holds a BA in History, did graduate work in Linguistics, and is certified in Library Technology. She is an active member of the Stonestown Family YMCA, is an avid hiker, Mah Jong player and dog lover. She is pictured with her rescue dog “George” who she describes as a “chuggle” (chihuahua, pug, beagle mix.) She is generally in the church office 3 afternoons a week.
