Meet Our Pastor and Staff

A Word From Pastor Sadie

Welcome to Bethany United Methodist Church. Ours is a congregation of progressive Christians open to the direction of God and growing in grace together. Everyone is welcome here, just as they are. Join our vibrant and diverse Reconciling Congregation as we discover what God has in store.

I stand in a long, respectable line of pastors to this Christian community. Our roots go back to the 1800s, but Bethany is committed to the future. We remodeled our old, failing building into a sign of newness at the corner of Clipper and Sanchez. We intend to be here at least another 100 years.

Music Director – Ray Capiral

Ray is a pianist, composer, teacher, and avid knitter, and took up the piano formally at age 15, lost in the turmoil of queer adolescence as an American 90’s kid and having discovered a dusty, old piano in his uncle and aunt’s garage. He could learn complex pieces just by ear, and began a self-directed course of study that would have him performing pinnacle works of Chopin and Beethoven after just one year of study. He was a student of Jason Phillips at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music (Pasadena, CA). After graduating from Herbert Hoover High School in 2001, Mr. Capiral began teaching piano lessons, and he attended Pasadena City College where he received his Associate in Arts degree in music performance (2006); he then attended UCLA and graduated with his Bachelor in Arts degree in music composition (2009). Throughout much of his formative years as a pianist, Capiral studied with Mario Feninger (, who was himself a formidable pianist and composer and received much of his training from Nadia Boulanger and his mother, Teresa de Rogatis. Mr. Capiral also accompanied and performed extensively around Los Angeles, and worked as a Teacher Aide at Saint Paul the Apostle School in Westwood, CA, before relocating to San Francisco, CA, in 2011.

As a struggling musician in the San Francisco Bay Area, Mr. Capiral discovered Methodism and knitting, and he served as Music Director at Open Door United Methodist Church (Richmond, CA) and Pianist/Organist at Mira Vista United Church of Christ (El Cerrito, CA) for three years before moving to his current post as Music Director at Bethany United Methodist Church (San Francisco, CA, He held that post from 2016-2019. He then moved to New York City and worked under Bill Capone at Arts Management Group in the service of some of the world’s greatest performing artists, until the 2020 pandemic crushed the industry and he decided to move back to SF and return to Bethany. And finally, Mr. Capiral works closely with Seldy Cramer ( and the Takács Quartet ( as their personal assistant.  To inquire about any music needs or requests Contact Ray by clicking here.
